10 Extraordinary Lessons Every Translator Should Learn from DR. Seuss

by OFER TIROSH 17/07/2014

Theodor Seuss Geisel, who wrote under the pen name Dr Seuss, is an acclaimed American author, poet and cartoonist. His bestselling books, such as The Lorax and Green Eggs and Ham have been loved by generations of children around the world.

But Dr Seuss’s quotes aren’t just for the young. Here we present ten of his most inspiring quotes that, if kept in mind, will help to make you a better translator.

For when you’re feeling bogged down by the demands of your clients:
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go...”

To inspire you to keep your skills updated:
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”

For when you’re questioning whether you should give up freelance life and return to the daily grind of a 9-5 existence:
“Why fit in when you were born to stand out?”

To inspire you to tackle difficulties head on:
“I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I've bought a big bat. I'm all ready you see. Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!”

For when you have a tricky client to deal with:
“So be sure when you step, Step with care and great tact. And remember that life's A Great Balancing Act. And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and ¾ percent guaranteed) Kid, you'll move mountains.”

For those working days that just seem to fly by:
“How did it get so late so soon?”

To encourage you to keep your career heading in the direction you want it to:
“Only you can control your future.”

For those moments during a difficult translation when your own brain seems to be working against you:
“I'm afraid that sometimes you'll play lonely games too. Games you can't win 'cause you'll play against you.”

To keep you spirits up when undertaking a long job:
“Today was good. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one.”

For those moments when you need to stay positive in the face of uncertainty:
“If things start happening, don't worry, don't stew, just go right along and you'll start happening too.”
